Must-See Planet of the Apes Movie (1968), As Relevant As Ever

I recently decided to revisit the movie Planet of the Apes (1968) starring Charlton Heston, Linda Harrison, Roddy McDowall, and Kim Hunter. As a child, I always looked forward to viewing this movie when it was on TV because I was amazed at how apes took over the fictive planet, threatening an actor like Charlton Heston, my former hero. What if this could really happen? I imagined as a kid. We were living in an interesting period at the end of the sixties, hopeful that there would be bigger and better things out there in space while dreaming about space creatures that could share incredible technology with humans. Yet, we weren’t sure those ‘martians’ would be benevolent. Planet of the Apes brought up some valuable concerns about planning for space travel and society in general. At the time, I didn’t discern the concerns the movie was trying to address. Today, Planet of the Apes makes it clear that issues like equal rights, climate change, war, atomic disaster, and the annihilation of the human race are all topics that should have been given more attention over the past half-century–a stark warning about the future of the planet.
